H.A.R.D. System Redesign Status

The Helmet Assisted Radar Detection (H.A.R.D.) System has been a very popular radar detector accessory for motorcyclists around the world since being introduced in 2001.  Over the years there have been many changes, some subtle, some significant.

At the present time, the H.A.R.D. System is under going a major re-design.  During the re-design, we made the decision to remove the H.A.R.D. System from the market in order for us to concentrate all our engineering and design resources on the new version.  We will not be releasing all the new features.  But as a teaser, here are a few of the new features:

 - Auto off – the H.A.R.D. System (V5) receiver will shut itself off automatically after a set amount of time (eight hours of use).  Before shutting itself down, the receiver will flash to notify rider of shut down.  If the rider wants to keep the receiver on, simply touch the on / off switch and the eight hour timer starts over.

- Weather Proof – the latest H.A.R.D. System receiver had a waterproof design. The new system will have both the receiver and transmitter designed to operate in adverse conditions.

- Standard Batteries – the H.A.R.D. System V5 will utilize standard, off the shelf batteries that will provide a cost effective power source.  There is a possibility of having a rechargeable option.

- Compatible with the leading radar detectors – The H.A.R.D. System V5 will be compatible with the radar detectors from Adaptive, Beltronics, Escort, and Valentine.

- Plug-n-Play Design – the H.A.R.D. System V5 will keep the simple plug-n-play design that has made it so popular over the years.

At LEGAL SPEEDING we pride ourselves on using our own riding experience and those of other riders in the development and refinement of our products.  We are open to any suggestions from experienced riders who are familiar with the use of radar detectors on motorcycles. 

Time frame for the H.A.R.D. System V5 to be available has not been defined. The H.A.R.D. System V5 will be extensively tested and certified before general release.  We are anticipating the official release to be no later than Bike Week 2012 in Daytona Beach, Florida.

Transmitter - If you are a rider with multiple motorcycles or detectors and want to have a transmitter dedicated to each of these, extra transmitters can be purchased. All transmitters are compatible with existing receivers therefore you do not need to worry about matching transmitters and receivers. DESCRIPTION:

The Adjustable Windscreen Mount (AWM) is a mounting option for motorcyclists to hold a radar detector or other gadgets directly to the motorcycle windscreen. The AWM allows a rider to place a gadget in a location where it is easy to see and space is at a premium. The AWM comes in two versions: a Bolt On version and an adhesive mounted version.  The Bolt On version (AWMB) requires two holes be placed in the windscreen.  The adhesive version (AWMVHB) uses 3M VHB (very high bond) two-sided adhesive tape.

The primary benefits of the Adjustable Windscreen Mount (AWM) are:

1. Holds Multiple Gadgets – The AWM can hold a wide range of gadgets such as radar detectors, cell phones, iPods, prepaid tollway cards, PDA’s, satellite radios, and MP3 players. Now a rider only has to buy a single mount to hold any device.
2. Fits Any Motorcycle Windscreen – the AWM fits all motorcycle windscreens making it easy to choose the proper mount for your motorcycle. Any model motorcycle from sport bikes to touring models can mount devices to their motorcycle. Now a rider only has to buy a single mount for any motorcycle.

4. Weather and Damage Protection – The AWM places the gadget behind the windscreen. This protects the gadget from weather and other debris damage. The gadget is also out of the way of the rider, tank bag, handlebars, and fairing.
5. Secure Mounting Solution – The AWM uses a combination of rubber grips and a heavy duty Velcro strap to anchor the gadget. This two-fold anchor method eliminates the chance of losing an expensive gadget while riding.
6. Quick Release – The AWM allows the rider to quickly remove the gadget by releasing the Velcro strap. Now the rider can easily take gadgets off the bike when taking a break or when the ride ends.
7. Two Versions – The AWM is available in two versions: a Bolt On (AWMB) and an Adhesive version (AWMVHB).  A rider now has the choice of how to adhere the AWM to their motorcycle.

DETAILS:

The Adjustable Windscreen Mount (AWM) was designed for motorcycles having a windscreen. The windscreen can have an angle ranging from being horizontal (as found on sport bikes) to being vertical (as found on cruisers). Once mounted to the windscreen, the AWM adjusts to provide a horizontal surface to place a gadget either on top of or underneath the AWM. The gadget is secured against the AWM by the use of rubber grips and a heavy duty Velcro strap.

It should be noted that the AWM has an infinite angle range. Once the AWM is mounted, the rider can tilt the AWM to the preferred angle to see and operate the gadget. There is no need to buy another bracket or holder to tilt the gadget. Two adjustment screws located on the AWM accomplish any angle adjustment, or tilting of the gadget.

Installation and Usage Guides

The AWM is attached to the motorcycle windscreen by placing two small holes through the windscreen OR by using 3M VHB adhesive tape. Placing holes through the windscreen is easy and can be done without the chance of damage by using one of the three methods listed below:

1. A Dremel tool using any one of the many grinding / drilling bits.
2. A heated wire to ‘push through’ or melt a hole in the windscreen.
3. Using a professional shop familiar with modifying plastics.

The AWMVHB, which uses 3M VHB adhesive tape, has been rated by 3M engineers to hold up to 16lbs!  Given this high weight rating, we guarantee it will hold a ten-ounce radar detector.  The LEGAL SPEEDING team has been running an AWMVHB since May 2008 holding various radar detectors without any issues.

The Adjustable Windscreen Mount (AWM) consists of the following components:

1. Mount Plate and Brackets
2. Heavy Duty Velcro Strap
3. Hardware Kit

The AWM Plate and Brackets are tooled from billet aluminum. Once tooled, all parts are powder coated for long life and durability. All hardware components are stainless steel to avoid any chance of rust or discoloration. Once mounted to the windscreen, Hinged Screw Covers provide a factory OEM look and feel to the AWM. The gadget is anchored to the AWM by a heavy duty Velcro strap holding the gadget against a number of rubber grips.

Please note, the AWM is NOT compatible with the Radar Box or the Radar Cover
which are also products offered by LEGAL SPEEDING.

The Radar Box is an enclosure that provides weather protection and security for all radar detectors.

BENEFITS:

1. Fits all Radar Detectors – All windshield mounted radar detectors sold today fit inside the Radar Box. This allows any automotive radar detector to be used on a motorcycle.

2. Weather and Damage Protection – The Radar Box places the radar detector inside a polycarbonate housing. This protects the radar detector from weather and other debris damage.

3. Security for the Radar Detector – The Radar Box covers the radar detector with a painted polycarbonate enclosure. This hides the radar detector from being seen by less-than-ethical people wanting your expensive detector.

4. Compatible with Existing Mounting Solutions – The Radar Box fits leading mounting solutions for motorcycles. If already using a RAM or similar mounting system, the Radar Box is 100% compatible which eliminates the expense of a new mounting system. RAM components not included with the Radar Box.

5. Compatible with Existing Shelf Systems – The Radar Box can be mounted directly to any flat surface. If a shelf system is mounted on the motorcycle, the Radar Box can be mounted directly on the shelf, which eliminates the expense of replacing the current shelf system.

6. H.A.R.D. System Compatible – The H.A.R.D. System transmitter can be placed inside the Radar Box. The H.A.R.D. System is now protected from weather and other types of damage.

DETAILS:

The Radar Box is made up of two main pieces: the top or enclosure section, and the bottom or plate.

The top of the Radar Box is a thermoformed polycarbonate enclosure. The enclosure is clear front and back and painted black on three sides to keep unwanted eyes off your radar detector.

The interior dimensions of the enclosure are 5.3 x 3.6 X 1.25 inches.   This allows room for the longest detector, the Escort 9500ix, and the widest, the Valentine, and the tallest, the Escort Redline. The Radar Box is sized to allow for use of the H.A.R.D. System. The H.A.R.D. System transmitter can be placed inside the Radar Box along with the detector.

The bottom or "plate" is made from high-impact UV - resistant polypropylene. Stainless steel hardware is included. The plate has two blind countersunk holes drilled that can be used to attach a RAM ball (RAM components not included with the Radar Box) or to screw onto a flat surface -- you just need to finish drilling the hole.

Placing the radar detector inside the Radar Box is easy and outlined in the following steps.

1. The radar detector is secured in place on the plate using Velcro (included). The securing of the detector to the plate avoids movement by the detector inside the enclosure.
2. The enclosure is placed over the plate.
3. Four thumbscrews are inserted to hold the enclosure to the plate and make it easy to open and close the Radar Box.
